** Now for the other information that makes any PodCamp, well, a PodCamp **

There are 6 rules which govern what may or may not be called a PodCamp. If your planned event meets all 6 and accepts the terms in the PodCamp Foundation License, you can call it a PodCamp:

  1. All attendees must be treated equally. Everyone is a rockstar.
  2. All content created must be released under a Creative Commons license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/
  3. All attendees must be allowed to participate. (subject to limitations of physical space, of course)
  4. All sessions must obey the Law of 2 Feet – if you’re not getting what you want out of the session, you can and should walk out and do something else. It’s not like you have to get your money’s worth!
  5. The event must be new-media focused – blogging, podcasting, video on the net.
  6. The financials of a PodCamp must be fully disclosed in an open ledger, except for any donor/sponsor who wishes to remain anonymous.

Additionally, sessions and events are strongly encouraged to be free to attend to allow as many people to attend as possible.

A Few UnConference Reminders for Attendees:
By Justin Kownacki

1. Don’t engage in self-promotion. Use your time to network, share your contact information and offer your help.

2. Bring extra business cards if you have them

3. Bring your laptop, iMac, iPhone, BlackBerry, iPad, etc. to jump online and tweet on Twitter to your heart’s content and take notes using them. PodCampers don’t like to waste paper; we are green folks over here.

4. Talk to people. Really! Don’t be shy! Introduce yourself to other attendees, speakers, sponsors, volunteers; this is your opportunity to meet new people, show your interest, and get involved.

5. Make time to attend the pre-party and after-party. This is another opportunity to network and talk about everything else in a casual atmosphere without time constraints.

6. Spread the word about the (un)conference. Most podcamps, wordcamps and Twitter conferences will designate a hashtag or icon to use online with photos, videos, blogs, tweets, etc. PodCamp Cleveland’s hashtag is #PCCLV11. Provide feedback and free to publish what you have learned from your un-conference. Feedback helps to improve the next event.

7. If you have it, bring your digital camera and take hundreds of photos and after the event, email or zip those files over to us at podcampcleveland@gmail.com to adding onto our PodcampCleveland flickr.com photo sharing account to promote for next year’s event

8. Additionally, bring your video camcorder and take lots of mini video clips (under 10 minutes in length for youtube.com) or videotape an entire session (for uploading onto blip.tv) and after the event, email or zip those files over to us at podcampcleveland@gmail.com for adding onto our blip.tv video sharing account to promote next year’s event!

Also, Justin Kownacki just did a VERY timely post recently on ‘The Golden Rule for Conferences.’ Learn more about PodCamps below and enjoy this light reading.

The only thing we need to make Podcamp Cleveland a success is YOU.

We are happy that we could bring PodCamp to Cleveland and will continue to do so each year!

PodCamp For Beginners: What to Expect #PCCLV11

Anxiously awaiting your first PodCamp experience? Great! Here’s a few things you should know about PodCamp Cleveland. First and foremost, you need to be aware of what a PodCamp entails, along with the overall goal of the event. Basically, PodCamps are informal conferences put together by members in the community. These people all share a common interest in all topics related to new media, including blogging, podcasting, streaming web video, and participating on social networking sites. (Do you know someone who is ALWAYS on Facebook or Twitter?)

An important thing to keep in mind is that not all participants in PodCamps are experts in social media (but have experience using it). Anyone is welcome to speak or simply attend PodCamp, and the atmosphere is extremely casual. A main goal of PodCamp Cleveland is to share and exchange information. Most importantly, all the attendees are there to learn and have fun!

A unique feature of PodCamp Cleveland is that attendees are allowed to leave in the middle of a session. Because there are so many levels of social media, sometimes it’s hard for participants to make a sound decision on what sessions to join. We allow everyone to move about freely across sessions. Regardless of the sessions you choose, don’t hesitate to share your knowledge and experiences with the rest of the group!

With only 16 days remaining….have you registered? We need to have a final head count – including speakers – so we know how much food, drinks & coffee we need!
